Camp?

For whatever reason, someone decided to trust me with their teenage daughters.

Yesterday, I got called as my ward's girls camp director.*

My first reaction: Yeah!

After I heard my name called over the pulpit, my bishop asking the ward to sustain me as the camp director, I heard several people gasp. Yes, gasp. And one sister in front of me grabbed my hand and said something along the lines of, "how great."

My second reaction: Really? Are you sure? Me?

I don't know what I'm doing. At all. I'm the first to admit that. And I'm sure most of the gasps were the types of gasps saying things like "oh-my-gosh-she's-so-young-are-you-serious?" types of gasps. But I do know one thing. Camp is the best. I went two times every summer. I have some of the fondest memories between hikes, archery, arts and crafts, cooking dinners, singing songs, pranks, inside jokes, hanging with cousins and making new friends.

This is what camp is about:

Oh and this...

It's about learning who you are. It's about creating memories. It's about growing closer to the Lord. It's about fun and pure silliness.

I'm excited to go to camp this summer. It'll be dramatic, stressful and difficult, but it'll be so worth it if I can make camp the same experience for my girls as it was for me.

So...any suggestions for a silly girl attempting to lead younger silly girls?

Always,

*If you're not familiar with the LDS religion, all of our clergy are not paid, and all leadership positions, be it a teacher or camp director, is voluntary based and we believe we are called by God.  The congregation, or ward, sustains an individual in their callings i.e. agrees to support them in their position at church. And "girls camp," is just that...a summer camp for girls ages 12 to 18.

Hannah, I just read this post! I for one did not hear any gasps. Maybe it was a glitch in your brain (ever see "gilmore girls" where rory hears a PING in her brain? anyway...)... I think you're going to be great. Let me know if you need help with anything, being that I am an YWs camp expert. ha. ;)
